大英百科全书，(又称《不列颠百科全书(Encyclopedia Britannica)》)，被认为是当今世界上最知名也是最权威的百科全书，是世界三大百科全书(美国百科全书、不列颠百科全书、科利尔百科全书)之一。不列颠百科全书诞生于18世纪苏格兰启蒙运动(Scottish Enlightenment)的氛围中。第一个版本的大英百科在1768年开始编撰，历时三年，于1771年完成共三册的不列颠百科全书。

 在1901年美国出版商Encyclopedia Britannica， Inc. 买下EB的版权后，出版与编辑工作逐步转移到美国；现在我们熟知的大英百科全书公司已是总部位于芝加哥的美国公司。1929年，随着第14版的问世，大英百科更投入大量人力与物力，邀集近140个国家和地区的4000位学者专家参与撰述，大量收录欧洲以外地区的资料，完成全部二十四册的第十四版，确立了它在百科全书界中最崇高、最具权威的地位。

 大英百科全书于1768年诞生于苏格兰爱丁堡垒，现在美国出版，是一部历史悠久、连续修订、享誉世界的权威性、学术性综合百科全书。内容涵盖政治、经济、哲学、文学、艺术、社会、语言、宗教、民族、音乐、戏剧、美术、数学、物理、化学、历史、地理、地质、天文、生物、医学、卫生、环保、气象、海洋、新闻、出版、电视、广播、广告、军事、电脑、网络、航空、体育、金融等二百多个学科。《大英百科全书》第15版于1974年问世，目前，除英文版外，还有法、西、日、葡、希、中、韩等10多种文本出版。
