Drawing from the culture and sonology of the indigenous people from West Kalimantan, this sample pack features the sounds of the Kadedek (mouth-organ) and Dau gong ensemble, recorded at Hars Musika Studio in Pontianak.
Nursalim Yadi Anugerah and Found Sound Nation teamed up to record the meditative drones of Kadedek and the interlocking ceremonial rhythms of Dau. The Kadedek (mouth-organ), played by Yadi, consists of a series of six graduated pipes, each one with an individual free-reed producing a different pitch. Dau is commonly used by the Kanayatn community in WestKalimantan for harvest ceremonies, weddings, and healingrituals. It consists of a series of eight gongs split between two musicians, We’ (first musician) who plays first-four low pitched gongs and Na’ (second musician) who plays the four higher-pitched gongs. In this recording, the musicians of the Balaan Tumaan Ensemble, Ananda Aristi Dewa and Bumadius, play several tunes including Bawakng, Jubata, Totokng, and Ledakng. Nursalim Yadi Anugerah is a Pontianak-based composer and multi-instrumentalist, well known for his peculiar approach to instrumentation and composition.
As a composer and DIY ethnomusicologist, Nursalim has collaborated extensively with indigenous musicians to preserve and reinterpret their music through new compositions. He has also served for three years as the music director for the Balaan Tumaan Ensemble, a Pontianak-based creative lab and performing group inspired by traditional Kalimantan music.
