《变形金刚：暗焰崛起》是动视前两款《变形金刚》系列游戏《塞伯坦之战》和《塞伯坦的陨落》的续作。本作游戏以搜寻“暗焰（Dark Spark，一个拥有强大力量的远古神器）”的过程为主线剧情。并且和前两作一样会同时展现博派和狂派两线的剧情，游戏方式也和《塞伯坦》系列一样具有快节奏和爽快的边跑边打的战斗体验。
另外，多人模式同样会在本作中保留。本作最多支持4名玩家协力抵抗一拨又一拨敌人的进攻，在此期间，玩家可以通过升级自己的防御系统来增强自己的防御能力。本作的角色发展将使用统一的系统，玩家在单人和多人模式中获得的经验均可以在所有模式下继承，比如解锁新角色，获得更加强大的武器，学习特殊技能等等。
