Description
If you love game design, have no experience coding and want to make games using blocks, this class is for you! Join me in this journey of learning Scratch from basic to advanced! We will learn to make games, animations and interactive stories through a series of 15 projects.
In this class, you’ll learn
How to make games in a visual-based coding language like Scratch
Fundamental programming concepts: loops, functions and conditions
Game planning and design
Debugging
Advanced mechanics: friction, gravity and inertia
You’ll be creating
15 projects in Scratch from games to animations and interactive stories ranging from simple to advanced.
Scratch is a great platform for game-making and story telling. Intended for beginner coders with no experience, Scratch is a fun and engaging tool to learn the basics of computer programming. In this course you will learn how to plan the development of a game, implement creative ideas and understand computational thinking. We will learn fundamental coding ideas such as loops, variables, conditions and functions. By the end of this course, you’ll feel confident using coding concepts and you’ll be ready for a more advanced coding language like Java-script or Python.
We’ll start with a fun project where we’ll learn how to use the move tools and change costumes. We will then introduce if statements, conditions and the forever loop. We’ll continue with an exciting runner game and a drawing game. Two classic games will be our next stop: Pong and Galaxy Attack. In these projects we will learn to send and receive messages between sprites and use variables. Next, we make a quiz game and a simple multi-page platformer. The last two projects are more advanced and we’ll learn to make custom blocks. The analogue clock project is divided in 3 parts and we’ll use trigonometric functions like sine and cosine. Finally, our last project will be a complex platformer game divided in 6 parts. We will make the movements smooth and cursive by adding inertia, friction, acceleration and gravity. We will interact with the level and add collision rules. The main character will collect items and store them in a list. When the player gets to the last page, it touches the green flag and that’s the end of our game. It’s going to be exciting!
Even if you’re new to coding, Scratch is a great platform to learn the basics of programming and game design! Give it a try and soon you’ll find it easy to make your own projects and bring your ideas to life!
