Naturally, young players and beginners have role models that help them learn the language of jazz through imitation, the same as in other fields of art. Nonetheless, as they develop, these players need to bring themselves into their music. In my view, it only makes sense for us as Europeans to become engaged with the fascinating world of jazz if we stay true to our European identity, and if we speak this “Foreign Language” with our own accents and idiomatic expressions that reflect the cultures that we come from.
