《战斗国际象棋》旨在将传统的桌上游戏搬到现代，但不会移除使其流行了几个世纪的真正精髓。为人所熟知的棋子们被赋予了生命，加入了高度细节化的3D模型，玩家将会看到它们在棋盘上厮杀征服的时候，每一个动作所带来的结果。
传统的黑白双方被改成了一方是身着闪光盔甲的勇敢骑士组成的光明军队，而另一方则是由恶魔和凶残的魔像所组成的黑暗军团。每一方在玩家控制它们移动的时候都会有复杂的动画，使得它们栩栩如生，随时准备参与战斗。若是棋子移动到一个已经被敌人单位占据了的格子的时候，它们将展开一次残酷的对决，力图在血腥的战斗中将敌人从棋盘上拿下。
《战斗国际象棋》的另一个进化元素就是名为“行动模式”的选项。如果选中了这个选项，两方棋子遭遇的时候就不再是播出制作好的动画以及固定的结果，玩家必须以遭遇战的形式挑战对方的棋子。用不同的武器、战斗技巧和连击，玩家必须用一系列快节奏的攻击和特技将敌人斩落马下——最终达成“将军”。
