在《术士之王》中，玩家将扮演一位抵抗术士之王的城堡领主，术士之王摧毁了世界的魔法宝器并为他所用，世界危在旦夕。玩家除去对抗这位敌人之外，还要与周边目光短浅的派系进行周旋，让他们共同对抗这位术士之王。玩家在游戏中需要进行探索世界，收集资源，结交盟友等等活动，这些特性也是4X策略游戏中的经典元素。

《术士之王》为4X策略游戏指明了全新的方向，玩家所对阵的是一位力量强大的巫师，而不是对抗一群平衡的派系，进行军备竞赛达成目标。在游戏世界中，术士之王已经征服了大片领土，他的敌人（包括玩家在内）散落在世界各地，玩家需要联合周围幸存的派系，进行联盟，最终击败这位BOSS。
