Status Quo are to release another batch of deluxe two and three CD releases via Universal Music. Under the spotlight this time are the ‘1+9+8+2’ album released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the bands formation, ‘Back To Back’ from 1983, which features the last studio performances of original bass player Alan Lancaster before he left the band in late 1985, ‘In The Army Now’ (originally released in 1986) and its 1988 follow up, ‘Ain’t Complaining’ which are all due for release by UMC/Mercury on Friday 28th September 2018.
First up is ‘1+9+8+2’ (also known as simply ‘1982’), which was originally released in April 1982, twenty years after the band was founded by Alan Lancaster and Francis Rossi – [“If you add 1+9+8+2 then you get 20” – see what they did there? – Ed]. This is the first Quo album to feature new drummer Pete Kircher, who had replaced John Coghlan in late 1981 and it was also the first one to credit keyboard player Andy Bown as a full member of the band.

The release was originally scheduled to coincide with Quos appearance at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, in the presence of HRH Prince of Wales, and the resulting publicity more then likely helped the release enter the UK album charts at #1, making it Quo’s fourth and last Number 1 album to date. ‘1+9+8+2’ received a lukewarm reception from fans with the first single, ‘Dear John’ reaching #10 in the UK singles chart whilst the follow up, ‘She Don’t Fool Me’ didn’t reach higher then #36.

The album was initially re-released in 2006 and contained a number of extra tracks (some of which aren’t included in this set) but what it does add is over 20 previously unreleased rehearsal tracks recorded at Fair Deal Studios in Brixton during March 1982 on the second disc.

Next up is ‘Back To Back’ which was the bands sixteenth full length album and was originally released in November 1983. Recorded at Beatles producer George Martin’s AIR Studios in Montserrat and produced by the band themselves, it settled in the British album charts at number nine, eventually selling over 100,000 copies in the UK alone.

The album produced four singles including ‘A Mess Of Blues’ (previously covered by Led Zeppelin and Elvis Presley), ‘Ol’ Rag Blues’ written by Alan Lancaster, ‘Going Down Town Tonight’ a track written by Guy Johnson specifically for Status Quo and the somewhat controversial ‘Marguerita Time’, which was despised by some band members at the time and still ranks amongst hardcore Quo fans as one of the most unpopular singles Quo have ever released!

‘Back To Back’ saw the band move away from the hard rock sound they’d been known for throughout the seventies and move towards a more pop orientated sound, and this album is thought by many fans as the beginning of the end of the “Status Quo sound”. The band didn’t tour in 1983, instead going out on the road in 1984 on their ‘End Of The Road Tour’ which was originally envisaged as a farewell tour, though frontman Francis Rossi was at pains to point out that “the band aren’t splitting up – we’ll still be a band as normal”. The final show of the tour at Milton Keynes Bowl would be Lancaster’s final full length Quo show until 2013.

The album was remastered and re-released in 2006 and contained a number of extra tracks along with extended versions of the ‘Ol’ Rag Blues’ and ‘A Mess Of Blues’ singles but this release also includes a previously unreleased cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Cadillac Ranch’ as well as adding on tracks from the Francis Rossi/Bernie Frost collaboration including ‘Modern Romance’, ‘The House’ and ‘Where Are You Now?’ on disc two.

In 1985 Alan Lancaster and drummer Pete Kircher performed with Quo at Live Aid in what would be a watershed moment for the Quo as both left the band shortly after. Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt re-grouped with keyboard player Andy Bown and in 1986 drummer Jeff Rich and bass player John ‘Rhino’ Edwards were recruited to the line-up to record ‘In The Army Now’ at Chipping Norton Recording Studios in Oxfordshire.

Continuing with the more pop orientated sound of ‘Back To Back’, the ‘…Army…’ album would reach number seven in the UK album charts and, like it’s predecessor, would eventually sell over 100,000 copies in the UK. Spawning the hit singles ‘Rollin’ Home’ (which reached number nine in the UK singles chart), ‘Red Sky’ which scraped into the top twenty and ‘Dreamin’ which reached a high of number fifteen, along with the number two hit ‘In The Army Now’, Quo returned to the road throughout 1986 supporting Queen on their ‘Magic’ tour as well as their own headline tours of the UK, Europe and United Arab Emirates. Quo, as their t-shirts boldly claimed, were indeed ‘Back’.

Included on this deluxe edition of ‘In The Army Now’ for the first time are ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Floorboards’, an unreleased b-side, an extended mix of a cancelled single, ‘Naughty Girl’ as well as a remixes of ‘Dreamin” and ‘In The Army Now’. Of particular interest are four previously unreleased live tracks recorded in Stockholm 1986 and Paris in 1987, which are also previously unreleased.
